I tried installing HID headlights in my Jeep but for some reason they don't seem to work properly when the vehicle is running. The lights work fine when the Jeep is off but when I start the Jeep up the lights start to flicker and eventually go out completely after 30 seconds. It is like they arent getting enough power to run which doesn't make sense to me.


Does anybody know what would cause this? Any help would be great!!

depends on how you wired them. Did you use a relay and go off the battery? If not I don't know if the integrated power thing on the jeep would like the HID's.

Ok, so did you just buy those blue-white light bulbs at an auto store or did you actually buy some a complete setup up, like Sylvania's HID light system? HID is not just replacing bulbs.

The "integrated power thing" is officially the Totally Integrated Power Module, aka the TIPM. The TIPM controls the headlights, as well as most other power items in the vehicle. It's there because with a power module like it running things, the switches and wiring that goes to and from them can be much smaller, creating a cost and weight savings. GM calls theirs the Body Control Module (BCM). Most new vehicles have them now days because the weight savings is something every manufacturer has to accomplish for gas mileage.

The headlight switch basically sends a control voltage to the TIPM and the TIPM does the heavy work to light the lights.

so I did some checking online and flickering aftermarket HID's seems to be a common problem with chrysler. Apparentally I have to either install resistors in the power wires leading to the bulbs to trick the TIPM or I can hardwire the positive and negative wires from the relay harness to the DRL's. It is also reccomended that I change the fuse on the relay harness from a 15 amp to a 25amp.

Which route do you think would be the safest?

Has there been anymore research on the HID issue? I am not pleased with the light spread from the OEM headlamps and I would like to upgrade to something that brightens farther and wider. I was thinking HIDs until I read Jeep-Bastard's issues. I do a fair amount of night driving on country roads.

I probably have the worse headlights ever 1gen intrepid, I can see just fine with them, quite frankly if you cant see with regular headlights maybe you are too blind to be driving. I am sick of being blinded by yahoos with out of alinement super bright lights

The resistors are to be installed in series with the relay coil to make it look to the TIPM that the original headlamp bulbs are still present? I'm guessing, but if that's the case, it ought to work OK.

Hello there I was planning on putting HID on mine Tomorrow, is it a mistake, or do you think it is not possible??? I too, feel the originals are just fine! I've been at 100 mph in the rural areas and never "out-drove" my headlights.

If you have problems seeing at night--get a cheap pair of "shooter's glasses" they're amber/yellow and will help enhance contrasts in low light. I had a prescription pair when I used to fly at night a lot and it really helped.

AlexMa; I have been debating for a while whether or not to do an HID How-to thread, because it is such a hotly contested issue. However I feel that the installation I did is safe and acceptable, and I would not hesitate to be on the road with other HID Patriots driving towards me following the same steps that I did. Since other forum members will no doubt still attempt to install HID headlights in the future I will do what I can to help out. I will attempt to have a How-To write up by the end of the day.
