: Black Muffler
Phantom2007 09-06-2007, 12:51 AM I did it! Painted the muffler flat black with 1200F Paint. Havent decided if I'm gonna paint the tip or not, or paint it and then cover the end of it with a chrome tip... any suggestions?
*Update* Posted the new pics here. Decided to leave the tip alone. I used 1200F Rust-Oleum High heat spraypaint. (under $5 at Walmart...)

SMJPG2008 09-06-2007, 01:10 AM Looks good. I've been thinking about putting a tip on mine. Not sure hubby would let me though haha
demolaysgirl 09-06-2007, 09:42 AM That looks really great! Really cuts down on the silver glare.
Now that I'm looking at getting a sport and not a limited (I'd really prefer to not have the silver bumper inserts...and now they've got silver on the sides too!), I'll definitely be looking at painting my muffler to make it blend in against my dark blue.
drenglish 09-06-2007, 09:53 AM Paint it black. No tip. Painting it black to make it less conspicuous, then slapping on a cheesy chrome tip to draw attention is kinda pointless, doncha think?
Nice touch it gives it a more finished look than the silver muffler.

I wanted the giant muffler can to dissipear, not sure about the exhast tip. I'm gonna leave it the way it is, silver tip black muffler can...
figueroacny 09-06-2007, 01:04 PM I would like to know won't the paint chip off?
jackster 09-06-2007, 03:51 PM I'm gonna put a coffee can on mine. Then I can hang out with the ricer crowd. LOL Seriously though, if you use high temp paint (1500*+) then you will not have any problems.
Pigshanks 09-06-2007, 04:03 PM Looks good :smiley_thumbs_up:
jackster 09-06-2007, 04:36 PM I think I'll paint mine too. Nice work.
MEGULA 09-06-2007, 08:20 PM Me likey! We'll probably do the same; black will look a lot better with the Inferno Red. :D
viprjrgirl 09-06-2007, 08:42 PM wow after looking at your pics, i just realized my muffler has a dent in it
kanus 09-06-2007, 08:51 PM Black looks good but I think I'll wait until my muffler starts rusting before I paint it black. My Patriot is silver so the silver muffler doesn't look too bad.

Eek! Abusing your poor Pat already?! hee hee :p

I wish lol, I'm babying my car
honestly I think it came that way, I thought it was normal.
Copper 09-06-2007, 09:39 PM Phantom 2007, very very nice! Wonder where you got such a great idea? Pure genius.
jackster 09-06-2007, 10:14 PM It's too bad you painted that heat shield though. It won't be near as effective as it was.
Dmentd_Dan 09-06-2007, 11:40 PM It's too bad you painted that heat shield though. It won't be near as effective as it was.
The side facing the muffler is still shiny and unpainted, so it shouldn't effect it to much.

Very funny. :) (Me and brndnlee2074 talked about doing this in my "I'm new here post" I think I just beat him to doing it or posting pics of it.) I did paint the outside of the heat shield, but not the inside. I'm not too worried about heat issues... If anyone else get's it done post pics!!! :smiley_thumbs_up:

I should be nicer. It looks good in black. I think a big chrome tip would detract from the cool simplicity of the Patriot's design. But it is your car, and you might prove me wrong. The thing that really makes we wonder is that there is NO chrome on the car ('cept the Jeep badge on front) and a chrome tip would just sort of sit there and say "I am a bolt-on part".
Anyway, my two cents plus a few more.
JoeBecker 09-07-2007, 11:05 AM Why stop at a chrome exhaust tip?
While you're at it make it bow-legged, get a crown for the dash, slap on a rear wing, get some hydraulics, put in a nitrous system, some 20" spinners, don't forget some neon (for looking good while cruising the strip mall at night), mirror window tint that is upside down, white wall tires, a $50 spray paint job with a $3000 stereo system, 25 DVD players, 2 gaming systems, and a partridge in a pear tree...
Don't stop until it has every concievable has-been or soon to have-been fad that everyone needs to put on/in their "ride".
Sorry, just can't help but laugh at those people that need to follow whatever is the current fad of the day.
I am just waiting for the fads of the '80s and early '90s to come back into vogue...
then I can break out my LA Gear tennis shoes again :)
Back to topic: The black muffler is a definite improvement for the medium to dark colored Sport Patriots.
nebcarson 09-07-2007, 11:17 AM got my steel blue today CRD Ltd...muffler is black on uk models...
hasty10805 09-07-2007, 11:20 AM Wish we all can have a CRD!!! Congrats!
nebcarson 09-07-2007, 11:55 AM thanks, pic soon.
SMJPG2008 09-07-2007, 01:24 PM put in a nitrous system,
then I can break out my LA Gear tennis shoes again :)
My husband was joking around the other day about a nitrous system in the Jeep.
OOOOH LA Gear and the tuck and roll jeans, the BIG hair, Ya know the punk look is around.
I crack up when I hear the little honda's running around and they sound like bee's bzzzzzzzzzzzzzing.
NoneRequired 09-07-2007, 03:01 PM Phantom2007, Looks great. Now I know what this weekend's Patriot project will be. This is the best kind of mod, if ya ask me, low buck and effective..
so how did you paint it?
did u take off the exhaust?
blackscpatriot 06-17-2009, 11:49 AM I just cut the muffler off, that thing is not just ugly its Fugly. even after cutting the muffler off it still isnt that loud. I just have to find the time and style i like for some nice dual tip exhaust mod.
Kahbrohn 06-17-2009, 12:11 PM so how did you paint it?
did u take off the exhaust?
No need to take the exhaust off.
Tape (blue masking tape) newspaper all around the area to protect the vehicle. You only paint the bottom part of the exhaust taking care of not painting the heat shield just above it.

Search around the forum a bit. There was a member who recently posted some pictures and he had some dual tips on. Looked real nice. I don't recal if he gave details or not. If I find that thread I will re-post for you here.
Nvan08 06-20-2009, 10:44 PM did the paint job on the muffler today. looks awesome. got the $5 can of 1200 degree paint, put up some cardboard so i didnt get the heat shield, sprayed it once, did another once over just in case. let dry. all good.
