Hello everyone,

Thanks for taking the time to read my post. This is my very first post on this website, but I must have read over 1000 posts in the last 2 months! Thanks to all you fine folks, the amount of information found within these pages is just insane! :notworthy:

I currently drive a mountain bike. And I am looking to purchase a 2009 patriot over the next few weeks *keeping fingers crossed*. I went to a local dealer and this is what he is offering me :

2009 Patriot North
North Plus Package
4x4, FD1, CVT with auto stick
17" styled wheels
A/C, Cruise, Power Group
stain/odor resistant cloth seats

This is a used vehicle and has +- 31K on it.
The only drawback is that the vehice comes from a rental place (something like enterprise car rental)

I did test drive the car and got my first glimpse of the auto-stick feature. What a gem! I love it! I am mecanically inclined, and didnt notice/hear anything squeaky or clunky about the truck when I took it for a test drive. Everything seems to be running in perfect order and all suspension/steering components are tight as new. And the interior is spotless.

The deal :

$ 20,700 (car price)
$ 579 (dealer fee)
$ 2,766 (gst/pst)
---------
$ 24, 045 (total price)

Is this worth it? I still have to figure out if the truck has the tow package installed. If not, I will try to get that in for the price.

After sitting down with the finance manager at the dealership, I walked away from the deal because he was trying sooooooo hard to sell me a monthly payment. I am currently looking at other financing options.

Thanks again for your valuable input! :smiley_thumbs_up:

I live in the states and if I did the coversion right you would be paying close to $22k American. I'm not sure what the "North Plus Package" is, but I assume it is a block heater among some other "extras". I have 09, with the same set up as you, minus what ever the North Plus Package, and I paid 23,785 USD total, before discounts. If this vehicle has 31 km or 3,100 km, not a bad deal, if its 30,000 km, I would walk away. Tell them $20,000 CAD total, includeing dealer fee and gst/pst, whatever the h*ll that is.

bigbadgreygoose did you price one out new?
It doesn't seem like you are getting that great a deal on a used one with 30K miles on it. I'd hit the local Jeep dealer and see what they can do for ya ;)

Thanks guys,

To be a little more specific...

31K = 31,000km ... so +- 19,300 miles
24K CAD = +- 22K USD

North Plus package :

leather wrapped steering wheel,
heated front seats,
cruise control,
audio controls on steering wheel,
all season touring tires mounted on the nice 17in alloy wheels

26E North : as davecanuck mentions in the above post.

As of now, I did walk away from the deal. But the salesman called me back yesterday. I still havent talked to him yet. I plan on calling him back tonight and see what else he has to say.

I found the deal to be reasonnable, but, I think I can get him to lower the price some more. What really pissed me off in the deal is the finance manager trying to get me to sign an 84 month contract, with zero down, at 7.99%APR

I found that to be completely absurd. He was trying to convince me NOT to put a 6K down payment...saying its a waste of money. right! :doh:

That is why I am trying to look at other financing options. Perhaps someone can point me in the right direction! :smiley_thumbs_up:

toesnose,

the MSRP on the exact same truck is $26,540CND...meaning...

26,540 (car price)
579 (dealer fee)
3525 (taxes)
===========

30,644 (total price)

Even with a negotiated msrp price, I doubt I can afford it! :(

Just remeber the finance guy makes commision from the bank on setting up financing, along with commision from all the extended warranties and extras he sells. 84 month contract on a used car doesn't sound right. Also never fall for the trap of negotiating payments, negotiate the price of the vehicle not the payments. Myself I would wait for a 2010 which you can probably get for close to what you are about to pay, plus warranty. here is a helpful link from edmunds.com on how to deal with the finance guy

WELCOME and good for you walking away from someone trying to push a payment on you.

however I'm confused when you referred to the Patriot as a "truck". I don't want to rain on your parade, but the Patriot is NOT a "truck".

Websters definition: "a wheeled vehicle for moving heavy articles: as

a : a strong horse-drawn or automotive vehicle (as a pickup) for hauling

b : a small barrow consisting of a rectangular frame having at one end a pair of handles and at the other end a pair of small heavy wheels and a projecting edge to slide under a load —called also hand truck

c : a small heavy rectangular frame supported on four wheels for moving heavy objects

d : a small flat-topped car pushed or pulled by hand

e : a shelved stand mounted on casters

f : an automotive vehicle with a short chassis equipped with a swivel for attaching a trailer and used especially for the highway hauling of freight; also : a truck with attached trailer "

for all of you referring to your Patriot as a "truck", which definition are YOU using? :icon_rolleyes:

I would not want to pay for a vehicle over 7 years. I made the mistake of financing over 6 before and I said never again.

Go for a 60mth/5yr finance or less if you can afford it and I would for sure put that 6K down as that will save you $$$ on interest over the term.

Your other solution is to some what bypass the finance guy and go straight to your bank or another and ask them what they provide for financing.

Have a great day and good luck!

A local southern Ontario dealer has advertised a used 2007 4X4 Patriot Limited with 59,000 kms formerly leased by the "ministry" for sale.
I test drove the car and liked it. No sign of a "leak" body and interior in excellent condition .
Asking price--$17,500 plus taxes=20,112. Lots of warranty still available.
Rumour has it rental vehicles are hard used.

Buy new. I bought the exact same vehicle but the 4x4 about one month ago. With a little give and take with the dealership I got it for 23,000 cdn and with 3.99%. Before you buy, check chrysler's website for any and all incentives, etc. See if the dealer will
inform you of any and all rebates, etc. Do not rely on the dealer to be open and honest
with you!! I had all the facts and he had no wiggle room. Go Jeep.

If you decide to buy this one, I wouldn't offer them any more than $20,000 (taxes in). I bought my 07 (FDII, 4x4, premium stereo, 17" wheels, etc) for $18,000 (all in). The asking price was $21,000 and PST was paid. So I think the actual price was around $16,850. It had 48,000km on it. This wasn't a rental return or anything either. Bought & serviced at the dealership by the original owner. A rental may have more skeletons in its closet. Also if you're serious about it get the VIN and do some checking.

Again, Thank you so much to all of you for your 2 cents! :smiley_thumbs_up:

I will be doing some more checking around this week.

I am applying for financing elsewhere so I can walk into a dealer and make a cash purchase. I think this will help me negotiate a better price and not have to worry about the dealer's financial manager (aka, thief)... As well as help me secure a better APR rate.

I do have the vehicle's VIN number and will be investigating the vehicle history a lot more. If all checks out, I will be able to go back to this dealer and offer 20K, taxes in, as per Toonage's suggestion.

rubbles : I have also found 2007 limited for about 17K. I know the limited is really nice, but you will never catch me purchasing/driving a vehicle with leather seats anymore than vinyl seats. no way. ever. ;) Just a personal preference which leaves the patriot "sport" and "limited" out of the picture. That is why I am limiting my search to the patriot "North". :D

And while I am shopping for a new or used 09....anyone know when the 2010 are arriving? I am in no hurry to buy the truck, so I may just wait to see what the deals on 2010 look like. Maybe Jeep will offer special purchase rates or incentives :smiley_thumbs_up:

Wow,

What a tough search this is turning out to be. I dont know about you guys, but here in Ottawa, dealers dont seem to want to move from the MSRP of a new car.

Here is the latest deal I have on the table. Feel free to comment as you wish!;) They are ALL very appreciated!

2009 Patriot North 4x4
26E package (cvt, shift stick, etc)
North Plus Group (heated seats, cruise, mags, 17in tires, etc)

On the road prices : $26,500
DownPayment : $8000
Financing : $18,500 @ 3.99% for 60 months = $340/mth
Total Price after 5 years : $28,400

(And yes, "on the road" means taxes, taxes, more taxes...pdi, freight, licensing, etc) :blah:

oh and, although I dont let it show....I really REALLY want this shiny new Patriot! ;)

If I read that correctly, that is the total price you would have to pay after all your taxes, etc? That is not a bad deal in my opinion. Have the work sheet looked at.
Have you thought about an auto broker?

i went the used route, but i bought mine as a program car from chrysler 2008 pat, sport (US)(fully loaded, sirius, heated seats, FD1, prem sound/sun, leather wheel, etc) with 14k miles and a smidge under 2 years remaining on the bumper to bumper warranty for $17,300 (american), financed at 5.1% for 60months. It sounds like I got a better deal than I bargained for I suppose. however 28k after 5 years on a brand new car (esp the lifetime powertrain warranty) just be sure you are planning on keeping it for awhile. I usually get a new car about once per year, but I really like this car a lot more than the previous 4 or so and am planning on keeping it a little longer, one thing I do however is pay my payments once a payperiod (2 weeks) minimum, I try to pay it once per week. Thats the full payment (for me about $270, a lil less but close enough). on a 5 year loan I should have it paid off in a little over 1.5years at the rate I've been paying it, the sooner I'm out from the loan and have the title free and clear the better off I'll be. (EDIT, added year of vehicled)

Hi Mopar,

No. I didn't think about using a broker. But I have been using the carcostcanada.com reports.

I have a spreadsheet to calculate the invoice price as listed per this report. And once I enter ALLLLLLLLL the numbers, I come to an "on the road" price of $26,128 ... And that is with a dealer profit of only 3% representing $750.

I suppose I could try to negotiate this price down some more. Yet I have to keep in mind that there are about 9 of these patriots around Ottawa. And most of them are a little more expensive because they have more options.

Out of the 5 dealers I visited : The first dealer told me "we dont negotiate patriot prices here because we cant keep them on the lot" ... The second dealer, after negotiating for an hour, told me "I have no more time for you"...and showed me out the door. :doh:

That leaves 3 dealers willing to nogotiate *lol*

Hi BLantow,

I did look at some used patriots. And it turns out that the interest rates are so high right now that I would end up paying only a few thousands less. I know a few thousands is a few thousands...But I dont feel its worth it since I plan on keeping the truck until I dump it in the scrap yard. (As I did with every other car I have owned in the past)

Also, here in Canada, we dont have LIFE warranty on the powertrain. :(

And as usual, you guys in the states get a better price, better warranty and better interest rates than we do *lol*

Reading your post, I see you did get a very good deal on your Pat!
