OpenOffice.org has always been a nice free alternative also, but Google sure is narrowing it's scope on Mr Gates.

open Office has it's quirks, but I will spend good money on good software but not a dime on bloatware when there are suitable alternatives.
Cheap and free alternatives to monolithic piles of code are good for all consumers in the long run.

If you have kids in school get the MS Office student edition. If not adopt one for the day. I have an older version of Open Office and use it every so often for creating a PDF document. Open Office is a resource pig but ok for most needs.

You don't need to be a student to buy the student edition. MS may like you to be but there's nothing to stop anybody from purchasing it and using it.

Hi kanus, I know Microsoft does not check and in truth it is not student but a home edition.
