WOW thanks!!! Wasn't expecting that many, it's not BAD, I mean it's pretty basic but thats all you need I guess. I still like the clean factory look and it's less likely to get stolen than a Pioneer or something. That last pic with just the time, that one is bad!!! Hope I never come across that screen LOL well I am hoping to win one of the bids in a couple days... I'm getting impatient!

The last shot was what it looks like when the radio is off. Just the time.

It is. But even tho it's off, that's the best they can do? 2200 bucks for a new unit and alll they can program is 1" high letters in the middle of a blank screen?

They could at least show the Jeep Logo that displays momentarily when you start the unit. Or a nice analog display of a ticking clock.. or something...

That is pretty basic for a Navigation setup. While the colorful screen is great looking, I don't am unsure if I would select that option at the moment.

srothfuss: There's no doubt about it. The REC radio at $2895 + $225 for the Sirius add-on as well worked out to almost 10% of the listed price for the vee-hickle. Ya really gotta want the NAV & Sirius to go that distance.

In my case, they wrote off both items to move the '07 from their showroom floor. We bickered for a couple of hours. It was sitting there pretty stale. I surmise our Pat may have had too many options and it priced itself out of the local market. The Canadian sticker was $33,000. I *think* the only goodie option not installed on ours was the U-Connect. I'd like it but I understand that a wire connected to some key fob looking thing would be the result with an at dealer install as opposed to something truly forming part of the dash or rearview mirror. Hmmm, the iPod Integration Kit would nice though.

The REC is good when it's free. :p

Geez, just saw this. Thanks Gaze.

It's amazing what a busted knee,:itchy-scratchy: a bottle of pain killers,:chillpill: and PLENTY of time on your hands can create :blah:......

May sound funny, but I really look forward to the day when I can't post as much.....

Cheers,

Those screens are absolutely horrible. It's not bad for factory, but for less than half the price I can have a nice pioneer unit with all the same features and more and with much neater and more pleasing screens than that. The nice thing about the factory unit (I'm assuming) is that because it is more primitive, it is probably easier to run than an aftermarket unit, and I guess a longer warranty to cover it isn't bad either (vs. usual 1-year manufacturer warranty from pioneer, alpine etc). It's all in preference I guess.:smiley_thumbs_up:

Very informative thread though. Thanks.

Nice pics, but I'm quite happy I didn't bother with this unit. I wasn't really impressed with the unit when I tried it out in a Patriot at the dealership, and at $2895, the cost is just far too much.

I bought a Garmin nüvi 360 and I love it! It was on sale for $550, and it came out of the box with the newest set of maps ('08). Plus, the 360 has handsfree-calling via Bluetooth, so I also saved some money by not paying the UConnect system. The other thing I like about the nüvi is that it has roughly 8hrs of battery life and fits in your shirt pocket, so you can basically take it anywhere with you.

Thus by skipping on the factory nav. system (and UConnect) which came to a total cost of $3190, I basically saved over $2500. :)

I'm thinking about an after market nav system and not sure if I'd prefer the in dash or a portable unit. Any ideas?

My opinion is this: 99.9% of the time, I know where I am going. A NAV system would just make the dashboard more complicated. (I can operate my radio and HVAC controls blindfolded.) For the rare occassion I need a map, I either can print one off the internet or buy a $400 portable Garman unit that I can take with me when I rent a vehicle.

I'm leaning to the portable as well. I have two cars and would like to be able to switch it between them.

Why can't the REC play a DVD movie on the screen, if it reading the maps of a DVD?!

I would guess it's so you can't play a dvd and drive at the same time.

The REC only has one DVD drive? That's pretty odd... the one on my Dad's new Tahoe has a dedicated slot for the map DVD, and another slot on the outside used to listen to CDs/watch movies on the rear fold-down screen or on the Nav system screen when you're in park.

Well, I have the nav system. It's not fancy, true, but tight integration with other systems in the car is nice. At list price it _is_ a little steep. Ah well, I want American business to succeed, don't you?

And how much did the Tahoe cost?

Err...

I know, but surely Jeep could charge a bit more just to tack on a dedicated map-DVD slot so that the other one is available for "real use" (ie. listening to/watching a DVD while using the Nav system).

I thought about getting a REC when I puchase mine, but I think I will build a carputer. Especially now since they have usb interface for xm. I could blow rec out the water with a carputer. 495 for the computer, 200 or so for a screen. but I have seen some fold out screens that take the place of the radio, those are 495.

It does have a map slot. There is a 6 disc and then the map slot at the bottom you never have to take out. And thats all we need is another person watching tv while driving. There are to many idiots out there that cant handle that. You know how many people almost hit me while on a cell phone and with that they can still have their eyes on the road. Did I also leave out its against the law in most places to have a front playing entertainment system set to play dvd's and tv? No system set up correctly should preform this action in motion, no factory install will.

I hope I'm not pulling this too far off topic, but you can actually go with an after market in dash for about $1000, including bluetooth. I can't post URLs yet (I need at least 5 posts), so just look for the following topic:

AVIC-D3 install in a Compass....

The Pioneer systems are crazy expandable (IPOD integration (very well done), XM, Sirius, Bluetooth, USB, Rear Camera, Video output, 2 AV inputs, 3 amp preouts, etc.)

The AVIC-D3 gives you the most bang for your buck, but it may not be great for you if you play CDs. There is only 1 disc slot, so you'll need to swap discs to play CDs or DVDs (the system will still remember you route when you swap disks though). We exclusively use an MP3 player, so it's not a problem at all for us. There are, however, other double-din nav systems that will fit and MK which don't have this limitation.

The in dash thing is a big plus for us, because with the radar detector, MP3 Player, and Cell Phone we don't need any more external wire mess to deal with or devices to hide when we park. I just hope kids are too lazy these days to steal anything in dash :)

For me, the OEM system seemed kind of expensive to install post-factory and the AVIC-D3 is a lot more flexible as well as being much cheaper.

If you put your nav disk in you can get your route it saves it if you take it out and want to listen to cd's. But you cant re route with out the cd back in there. Taking the cd in and out all the time can lead to scratches do you know how much the disks cost? Crazy expensive! There are more than one disk to pioneers nav and if you are traveling next to a state line thats the cut off for one disk its a total pain in the butt. Just my experiance.

this is why I will use a carputer, I can install the maps to the harddrive, street atlas 2006. plus I will have my mp3's saved to it. might incorporate engine management software.

For me this system is prefect. There are only 2 DVD, a US East and US West. I am on the East Coast, and I would have to drive about 1500 mile west before needing to change a disk. You can and should make a backup of your Nav DVDs regardless of the system you use and keep your originals in a safe place.

As far as CD swapping goes, as I said before I only use my MP3 player in the car.

If any of these issues are a problem for you, I totally agree that the D3 is not the solution for you. You can always look at the AVIC-Z2 which is HD based, but you'll pay about twice as much for the unit.

this is why I will use a carputer, I can install the maps to the harddrive, street atlas 2006. plus I will have my mp3's saved to it. might incorporate engine management software.

As far as the carputer goes, unfortunately I bought the parts I needed in install a carputer in my S10 about 4 years ago (Opus 12v power supply, Xenarc 7" touch screen, 80GB 2.5" HD (biggest at the time), GPS puck, 1.2Ghz ITX Board and case), but have yet to do anything with them. I would love to get it together in one of my vehicles, but I run an IT business and just don't have the time to tinker like I use to and have to accept that it just isn't going to happen.

If you're up for that kind of install, I am all for it and would love to see the end result. Best of luck!

If you mod the NAV to include the ipod interface as you have done, is it still possible to use Satellite radio? Thanks
