Ive had my 09 Pat now for about 3 weeks and 1000 mi. and love it. I have the 2.4 engine. I have noticed that when I start it in the morning the engine revs to about 1600-1800 rpms and stays that way for at least 15-20 secs. Usually Im late for work and cannot wait for the revs to come down. Is this normal for this engine? I havnt owned a 4 cyl in over 20 yrs but I dont remember it reving this high on 1st starts. The temps in the morning has been about70 degrees. It also happens when I start it after work when the temps have been in the high 80s to low 90's. It doesnt do this through out the day if Im running around running errands only after long periods of time.

Mine riot is also doing this. Mine is parked inside a climate controlled garage which doesn't get lower than 68 degrees. It usually takes about 30 seconds for me and the rpm's go up and down. I've had cars that start on high RPM's when it's cold and it's usually constantly high for a minute or less then it eventually goes down to idle, but on my riot, the rpm's usually go up and down, then it levels down to idle after 30 seconds or so.

Yep thats what mine does also. Most of the time I dont have time to wait for the rpms to go down and I put it in gear and go I hate doing that. My big worry is what will it do when it starts getting really cold. If it idles this fast in the summer whats it going to do then. Ill have to go out and start it 10 minutes before I leave, therefore ruining my gas milage. If its supposed to do this then fine no problem just dont like putting it in gear with rpms so high dont want to break anything.

Initial hi rev is normal by design. Both mfrs & govt regulators want the cold engine to warm up quicky to prevent stalling & reduce harmful emission (eg. heat up the catalytic convertor).

In the old days of carbureutors, the initial rich gas mixture was controlled by the wide open thottle flaps & manual chokes, until warm up.

Nowadays, the modern onboard computer put the fuel system initially in "open loop" when gas is dumped into a rich mixture until warm up. At about 66 deg C (150F), fuel mix control is given to the oxygen sensor for normal "close loop" mixture, causing the rpm to settle down. This loop transition can be observed with a scangauge.

FWIW. On the oem temp gauge, 66C (150F) occurs when the needle is at the right-most edge of the letter "C": that when the "loop" transition occurs and the rpm should start settling down.

In the summer heat, my idle rpm is below 800, and fuel consumption below 1 litre/hr (0.26 gal/hr).

Normally, I start moving after 5 second on ignition. I experienced no scary surge motion on putting into 1st gear (manual tranny).

was told noise was from bad bushing need new LF control arm?
also told RF tie rod worn, needs replaced...

hum! there seem to be a little confusion here. as for the high rpm when starting, mine is the same, but as soon as you put it in drive it goes down.

My 2.4 Avenger does the same thing , Turn key , fire up , engine revs for 5-6 secs . By the time its dropped back down to tickover, I'm already in R & backing off the driveway!!

is very normal with the actual 4 cyl generation (Avenger, Sebring, Patriot, Compass, Caliber, Journey etc)

and talking about the noises from suspension, yes... I heard weird noises, but I donīt know if this is normal or not.

My engine started doing the same not too long ago. Not sure if I should be worried, but everything's Kosher apart from that, so I dunno....

my 07 Patriot doesn't do this, even in cold weather it doesn't go above 1500 rpm. Right now it'll start at about 1200 and go below 1k in 10-12 seconds. I don't know what could be causing this for you guys...

Mine revs a little at startup too. I guess if you don't want to shift into gear with it revving, you could always just go into Neutral and roll down the driveway (if you have one)

My 2008 will start up and run 1500 rpm for a few seconds as well. Just change your start-up order to give it a few extra seconds. For example, I start the engine first thing, then put on my seat belt, tune in a radio station, check my mirrors (make sure no one is standing/walking behind me), put my foot on the brake, release the parking brake then put the patty in gear, check mirrors again and start moving. Doesn't seem like much, but it's 5-6 seconds of stuff before I actually start moving. In the winter, I even reach in and start it up before I put my laptop bag in the back and/or clear snow/ice. Again, it's only a few extra seconds, but it helps.

is better for the engine and tranny wait 1 minute... that minute allows the oil get better in all the engine and tranny, the worst thing that you can do, is start your car and go! just wait 1 minute...

So, is better for the fuel pump wait to turn the key ignition to ON and wait the bzzzz noise stops, then , turn on the car :D
