We'll be running a fairly easy trail this weekend near Dillon, CO called Keystone Gulch (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=250).

Meet at Dawson's in Englewood at 8:30am for the Front Range participants and 10:00am at the Silverthorne Phillips 66 (exit 205 on I-70) for those in the Mountains. PM me for addresses.

FDI should have no problem with this trail. It'll be a nice relaxing run with a length of 15 miles. Depending on time, we may hit another trail in the area, Peru Creek (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=163), also an easy trail.

Dawson, to be honest, Keystone Gulch, there will not be much to see. Keystone Gulch is a service road that goes to the base of North Peak and the Outback area. There are not any significant mining areas. But there is a lot of dead pine trees.

If you were on mountain bikes then connecting to the West Ridge area and the Colorado Trail would be interesting.

I would go directly to Peru Creek. You can drive 4.5 miles up to the Shoe Basin mine. There are only a few spots where any ground clearance is needed. But there is a lot of old mining activity up Peru Creek. While the Trails Illustrated, National Geographic, maps are fairly good - but have not been updated in 20 years except for adding colors - the best maps are the Latitude 40 maps. The Forest Service office in Silverthorne (across from Target) has sold the Trails illustrated Summit County map in the past.

Two of the most interesting sights from the road are the Pennsylvania Mill and mine and the old Argentine Pass Toll road over the Continental Divide. You can see the old road from just past the Pennsylvania and all of the way up to the Shoe Basin Mine parking lot. This lot was built in 2006 and you can tell you there by the old mining house on the right. Park in the small lot on he left because if you keep going up the road you will go around a left curve and have to stop at the closure gate and have to back up, no way to turn around.

From the parking area hike up to road into Horseshoe Basin. The trail head for the Argentine Pass road is about .3 of a mile. A little farther up the road you will see Gray's Peak at the end of the basin. The hike to the end of Horseshoe Basin is about one mile and ends at about 12,000 ft elevation. Take your own water. The water in that area is toxic from the old mines, look at the color of the rocks at the stream bed.

I would not try the Chihuahua Gulch road in a Patriot. Too rough. I would also drive past the Peru Creek turnoff and go up to Montezuma. Then continue for another mile plus up to the beginning of the Deer Creek road. The turn off to Webster Pass is 1/2 mile before Deer Creek. This drive would be more interesting than Keystone Gulch and far better scenery.

Thanks for the info CWM, we'll take a look at some of the other trails in the area. These are all pretty short so we might hit a couple areas on Sunday. Are you planning to attend?

We'll save Chihuahua Gulch for a weekend when we get crazy. We did Slaughterhouse Gulch a couple weeks ago and had no problems - didn't even use the tow hooks. These two trails are similarly rated by TrailDamage.com.

Sounds like we'll have a decent group with at least four of us: Todd, Rob, BSCB, me...

Sounds like fun guys.
I wish I could join you.

Try and find a steep incline with loose sand/gravel and take videos of everyone going up it. It maybe would answer some questions in the other threads.

This was a great outing. In attendance were Dawson (Stock FDII), Dadunkindude (FDI + Skids), Robert.Zearing (Lifted FDII) and BSCB (Lifted FDI). After meeting in Silverthorne, we proceeded to skip Keystone Gulch road and head straight for Peru Creek (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=163) (rated 2/3), which is a rough dirt road with a few rocky sections. On our way down we decided to run Cinnamon Gulch (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=164) (rated 4/4). Though a little more tricky, this trail was easily checked off by the Patriot. Toward the top, however, the Pat's began to lose power (11k ft). We had lunch at the top of the gulch with amazing views. After coming down, we decided to further test our rigs on Chihuahua Gulch (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=165) (rated 4/5). This trail was rough, but never posed a significant problem for the Patriot. BSCB had a slight mishap in straying too far to the right of a log bed and needed to be pulled out. And, I got hung up in a subsequent creek crossing requiring a tug. But in both instances the Patriot made it through the obstacles by choosing a better line.

Dunno. Dude is graduating the Academy and taking off next week (busy this weekend); Bobby-Z is generally pre-occupied by his woman and some BS about joining the Army ;-); haven't talked to BSBC in a while but he has a Wrangler in the works; my Raider should be done this week, and hopefully registered next week, then the Jeep will be for sale; parents are coming in for Memorial weekend, work is SWAMPED, and we have a lot going on with the house. So, I'm not sure when there will be organized trail runs in CO...
