...he Compass Rallye and Patriot are both based on the Dodge Caliber hatchback platform, and both Jeeps will offer a 2.4-litre petrol and a VW-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine.

"The vast majority of our vehicles sold in the last few years have been diesel powered and it is vital for the success of these new Jeeps that we have a small diesel engine that is competitive in the family hatchback segment. The 2.0-litre diesel will enable Jeep drivers to achieve a combined fuel cycle figure of 43.5mpg for the first time."... source (http://www.autoblog.com/2006/09/12/jeep-compass-rallye-for-the-uk/)

Look about 1/3 of the way down the page for "JEEP TO LAUNCH PATRIOT AND COMPASS RALLYE IN UK"

Does anyone know why they don't release the same vehicles in Europe and in the US? Is it because of the pollution standards?

These are the Dodge Caliber averages in Europe :

16.4 Km/l for 2.0 litre diesel

13.7 Km/l for 1.8 litre gasoline

12.3 Km/l for 2.0 litre gasoline CVT

You can compare them with the Caliber mpg to get the Jeep averages.

Yep, it's because Europe has cleaner diesel fuel than the US. Ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel will be available everywhere in the US by the end of 2006, and you'll see a ton of new diesel vehicles in the US in two years or so.

16.4 (kilometers / l) = 38.5751918 miles per gallon

Those Caliber figures are for FWD, right? So 36 mpg is about right for the AWD Compass Rallye.

Remember that the diesel being used is supplied by Volkswagen. Pollution standards have kept supply down and high diesel fuel costs have kept demand down. You might want to check on the Jetta 1.9TDI to get some performance specs.

Also keep in mind that in the event a diesel is slipped into the Patriot in 2008 or 2009, it won't be that VW engine.

It would be nice if D-C could stick to one supplier for their small diesels...like D-C rather than rely on multiple outside sources. :-)

I hear that. They produce more diesels than anybody else, but they have to buy engines from VW? Hopefully they'll choose Detroit Diesel, Mercedes, or Cummins (not in-house, but a valued partner) for their future diesel needs.

It will have the same diesel as the Compass. And no 4WD is available with the diesel.

Maybe you are right.

In 2009 in Europe we will have a new pollution limit called EURO 5, while the Caliber VW engine is now an EURO 4.

By the way, the EURO 5 diesel engines will be very expensive, I'd rather prefer the gasoline VW twincharger

I'm talking about the future North American diesel engine option, not the current Euro engine (the 2.0). You can bet 4WD will be available with the diesel in the US.

IF a diesel is offered in the US.

Obviously it's an if, since it hasn't been announced. But it's a pretty safe bet that we'll see diesels across the Jeep line in a couple of years. I just hope diesel fuel prices come back down to Earth (somewhere in the neighborhood of midgrade gas prices), or it will all be for naught. :(
