: NAV Startup Screen
quasimodem51 07-27-2007, 08:11 PM Just got back from a 3 day road trip with my new Pat. Everytime I start the NAV system, I must accept some terms of use. Is this normal? Or, have I missed some step that can get me out of having to deal with this, what I will call, startup screen?

I always get it as well. I dont know of a way to kill it.

DanCMH 07-27-2007, 09:19 PM I've read through that before... With the unit less than two weeks old I'm not willing to risk turning it into a brick just yet if something goes wrong...

Everyone gets it, its like that way for legal reasons. Just hit enter and go about your normal routine. I don't even think about it when I get in anymore. Our car nav does the same thing also.
quasimodem51 07-28-2007, 09:02 AM Thanks folks. Thanks for the link n.n.j but I am with Dan and will let sleeping dogs (DVDs) lie. Like Amy says, I will just accept and go about my day.
nearly.normal.jimmy 07-28-2007, 10:14 AM Hesitation completely understandable.
In reading thru the thread, most people are having trouble with the proper burning sequence in order to get the NAV unit to recognize the disk. Not necessarily with the patch itself.
Once they got a working disk, it seems that everyone who applied the patch says it is working flawlessly.
I am installing a NAV radio next Tuesday and I plan on applying the patch so I will let everyone know how it works out.
Cheers,
Jim

Hey Jim,
Where did you purchase the unit?
nearly.normal.jimmy 07-28-2007, 12:44 PM Where did you purchase the unit?
Ebay. New for $750. Came with GPS antenna but not the DVD map. Found a torrent of that tho.
I watched eBay for about 2 weeks before I bought that one. I saw quite an increase in REC units during that time.
Cheers,
Jim
mcatenacci 08-09-2007, 08:42 PM $750 for the factory unit?! Am I searching wrong??? The cheapest I found was like $2200... I really want the factory one... I'm afraid of getting an aftermarket... please let me know, thanks! :)

Tuesday's gone with the wind, but I did finally try the patch.
Works great. The nag screen is still there, but data entry is now available while moving.
mcatenacci 08-10-2007, 03:54 PM No wonder! I was just typing in Jeep Compass Navigation thinking they were different. Thanks, I'm gonna get one :D Did you have any issues getting a used one? How was installation, is it hard? Where did u get the bezel kit from? My dealer doesnt sell it, so I'm gonna get that on ebay too.
Thanks so much for the help!!!!!!!!!!!!
mcatenacci 08-10-2007, 03:57 PM Nevermind, you got a new one, those are more expensive... I dont know if I should pay a few hundred more and get the new or save and get the used... anyways, once I get one, I'll need help with the coding so I can use it while moving also :)
nearly.normal.jimmy 08-10-2007, 10:22 PM Nevermind, you got a new one,
The seller was 8955walter. He moves quite a bit of electronics. He may get another REC unit. I lucked up with a new one for $750. It had the antenna but not the navigation DVD.
It seems most of the REC units on eBay are pretty fresh and new units. With the surge on Patriot and Compass sales there may be a lot of folks swapping for an aftermarket shortly after purchase.
I dont know if I should pay a few hundred more and get the new or save and get the used.
After having played with the unit now, if I had to purchase another. I would not pay more than 850-900 for a new or VERY new unit. For that amount you can put a Pioneer AVIC-D3 in with all the add-ons for full integration.
The Pioneer offes much more versatility and options.
Where did u get the bezel kit from?
justforjeeps.com Item # 82210667 $42.30
I'll need help with the coding so I can use it while moving also
Creating and running the patch is a no brainer and the patch is safe and works fine.
The trick is burning a compatible dual layer DVD that the Jeep will read.
If you don't get it right the REC just doesn't read it.
Did you have any issues getting a used one?
For some really great REC info and a must read before used purchase:
http://www.wkjeeps.com/wk_nav.htm
Scroll about half way down.
You will see the entire line of REC unit model numbers, their cost, etc.
You want to make sure to get one AFTER they revised the joystick.
When looking at the DVD maps. The AE disk is the latest.
How was installation, is it hard?
If you have done ANY kind of stereo install, you could do this one. It may even be easy enough for someone's first try. There are diagrams around.
Cheers,
Jim
mcatenacci 08-11-2007, 12:13 AM Thank you SO much!!! Yeah you did luck out! I'm trying to get a used one right now for $850 because it's the 2007 version. I checked out that website you told me about and I will make sure to get the one with the revised joystick, but are you sure the Compass is compatible with all of those, not just the latest one?
I know what you mean, I really wanted the Pioneer AVIC D3 but it got too complicated with the steering wheel audio controls and all that. Best Buy wanted like $1600 after taxes to get it right and installed, which is crazy since the unit was $1000. I just didn't trust it since everyone tells me the airbags, security system, etc are all tied into the radio so I wanted to keep it factory. I like the clean look too.
It's not touch screen though is it? Is it easy to use and ok though? Lots of points of interest etc..?
Thanks for the info!!! I dont know anyone else who has the stock GPS in their compass/patriot.
nearly.normal.jimmy 08-11-2007, 11:28 AM I will make sure to get the one with the revised joystick,
Get the revised Joystick or later. All of them after the one that says is revised has the new joystick. Mine wass a 84AE unit.
but are you sure the Compass is compatible with all of those, not just the latest one?
Honestly. I am not sure of ANYTHING for the Compass. I drive the Patriot. :p
I know what you mean, I really wanted the Pioneer AVIC D3 but it got too complicated with the steering wheel audio controls and all that. Best Buy wanted like $1600 after taxes to get it right and installed, which is crazy since the unit was $1000.
The AVIC is $750 give or take 40 bucks.
The CHYAH05 is $75
The PESWICAN is $60
The PESWIPS is $30
So you are at around $915 for the AVIC and necessary parts ordered online.
From what I can tell the AVIC is the same size chassis and face as the REC unit, so it should just slide in and look as clean with the same mounting gear.
A reputable shop (NOT C.City or B.Buy) should be able to install in about 4 hours or less I would think.
Dash, bezel removal and radio access is very easy and straightforward.
It's not touch screen though is it?
No. BIG BIG omission.
Is it easy to use and ok though?
Joystick input is awkward. It sees a bit primitive and lacking at times and is not the most intuitive system. But it works. Driving directions can get a little funky.
It will get you there I guess, sometimes it's just the 'comical' way.
Lots of points of interest etc..?
I have not played around with POI's much yet. The only icon I turn on is Gas Stations and I am still looking for the Shell station they say is across the street from work in an empty field.
But it's usually right.
One of the largest complaints I have about the REC unit is the interface look, color and feel. It's like it was created with 3rd graders in mind. The 'tab' look of CD/Sat on top is silly and there is just soooooo much wasted space and blank pieces. The font choices and layouts are not very technical looking and the whole thing seems like it would be more at home running a kitchen appliance then an in-car sat system/radio/CD. But that's just my opinion ya know.
If I did it all over again, and I could not find a new one for the good price I did, I would probably go with the Pioneer unit.
I dont know anyone else who has the stock GPS in their compass/patriot.
There are quite a few who have it installed from the factory. But I think the lack of chatter about it shows that there just isn't really a whole lot to talk about with it.
Cheers,
Jim
mcatenacci 08-12-2007, 03:44 PM Now you are really confusing me  It's still going to be very expensive for the Pioneer, probably more since I won't be able to install myself.. the unit goes for $1000 here in Canada, we always get screwed... then I would need an additional harness, was told $250, I was told it won't fit exactly in the Nav bezel... then all that other complicated stuff plus installation :( The factory one is the easiest choice, I bet its just going to get annoying without touch screen!! Do you have any pics of how it looks running, like the 3rd grade looking stuff you're talking about LOL... I hope it's not too bad.. I just can't believe how the factory option for it was almost $3000 Canadian and it's that cheap!!
nearly.normal.jimmy 08-12-2007, 06:04 PM Now you are really confusing me
I was EXACTLY where you are about a month ago.
The factory one is the easiest choice,
Absolutely. That is why I went with it also.

get annoying without touch screen!
You can move the joystick or twist it to cycle thru characters so it's not horrible. But not the greatest setup.
I hope it's not too bad..
My biggest interface gripe is with the audio. Too many blank screens and empty boxes.
All that screen real estate is really put to waste.
We don't have anything that even reminds you there is audio playing.
No EQ,LED readouts, VU meters, graph, red flashing light to the music, nothing. Nothing prety to look at at all.
They should have an option to turn the whole screen to a 20 band visual EQ just for the eye candy. Then if they could actually make it functional instead of the very limited 3 band we have now, man we would really have something nice!
In Navigation mode, there is more info to deal with so the screen fills up and doesn't have such an empty feel to it.
But it is still a rather bland and uninspired look, imo.
As a whole, the unit functions decently and seems sturdy.
It's not the greatest thing, but when you factor in that it is not just a Nav unit with a nice sized screen, but also a 6 cd changer, Sirius and FM radio and iPod control compatible for about a grand, you have a pretty nice deal.
Cheers,
Jim
mcatenacci 08-12-2007, 08:03 PM Thanks for all your help!!!!! This has helped my decision a lot, I am pretty much gonna go with this one, I just hope if I get a used one, it comes with a manual so I know how to use all the options. One question, I dont use Satellite radio, but for the regular radio, does it show what station is playing, like the name of the station and type of music? My brother's stock Navigation did that in his Hummer and I liked it. With an MP3 cd, will it show the song name and artist on the screen?
I think this is the best way to go!
quasimodem51 08-13-2007, 02:13 PM Hi mcatenacci and greetings from Brampton.
Not all FM stations have additional info. I listen to CHUM-FM 104.5 and it toggles information every so often. haven't scrolled through others yet. It briefly shows the song title and sometimes the weather. Not sure how frequently tho. They drive like maniacs here so I have to keep my peepers on the road. I don't know about AM stations.
mcatenacci 08-13-2007, 02:41 PM Small world!!! I used to live in Brampton, liked it there, but it's changed a lot now! We lived in the P section LOL... people drive crazier in Woodbridge just for the record haha.
Thanks for the info, thats pretty cool that it even displays the song title sometimes, I just like even when it shows the station and music type, like my brother's would show "z103.5 - top 40" or something like that.
I hope I win my bid in the next couple days, I really want this nav now! Did u get it through the dealer?? They wanted $3000 for it here!
quasimodem51 08-17-2007, 12:50 PM Yes the NAV and Sirius were part of the floor model we bought> they reduce the sale by $3000 because we didn't want the NAV and Sirius.
Now that we have the NAV, it's pretty cool, but not worth $2895 CDN.
The best aspect of the NAV is it will find you gas food and lodging in virtually any town in North America.
I would LOVE the iPod Integration Kit but at just over $400 installed plus tax, it's a tad pricey.
The Sirius is really no big deal. I probably will not set up the ongoing subscription.
nearly.normal.jimmy 08-17-2007, 01:01 PM I would LOVE the iPod Integration Kit but at just over $400 installed plus tax, it's a tad pricey..
You can get it for $170 and if you or any friends/family can use a screwdriver you could install it yourself.
Very, very easy install.
Jim
nearly.normal.jimmy 08-17-2007, 05:08 PM I will add tho, having the iPod integration installed kills your Sat/Radio presets.
Meaning each time you use the iPod, any stations you programmed will be erased .
VERY VERY VERY irritating.
Jim
Sigpnut 12-13-2007, 01:28 AM I've looked through the hack sites and still can't manage to find a way around the NAG screen. Has anyone managed to figure this out yet?
Sgtarky 12-13-2007, 08:35 PM $750 for the factory unit?! Am I searching wrong??? The cheapest I found was like $2200... I really want the factory one... I'm afraid of getting an aftermarket... please let me know, thanks! :)
why are you afraid of aftermarket, afraid of getting increased functionality?
Tasha125 12-16-2007, 05:40 AM the REC unit huh? it isn't touch screen is it? if not... how is that even remotely acceptable??!!!
