: Remap petrol UK Patriot?
outrun 07-11-2009, 04:33 PM My Petrol Pat is doing a hearty 29.8 mpg combined and is now fully repaired and working as it should. However, i'd like a little more power through the rev range.
I know it's easy to remap the diesel but can you remap a petrol model? If so, does anyone know more about who does it, what gains there should be and what it costs?
If not, what can i do to produce more power? I was toying with selling as i find it painfully slow (my other car is a 911 turbo and i'n used to very fast cars) but have decided that i quite like it and it's grown on me. I don't mind spending a few pounds if the gains are decent but i don't want an MTV Pimp My Ride special so no performance exhausts or supercharger kits please.
Surely there's more to be had from the engine? At 2.4 lites it should be easily capable of another 50bhp.
Oh and i'll be at least changing the rubbish, sqeaky pads to Pagid or EBC to get more out of the braking system.
Thanks!
todde702 07-11-2009, 05:38 PM I don't think you'll find too much more power without going to some sort of forced induction. At 174hp out of a 2.4L, it's already making some good numbers. In US terms, 146 cubic inches, which means 1.2 hp per cubic inch is a good score. Plus you're mpg score is going to drop. Use the Patriot as your get around and jump in the 911 for the go fast days.
If it's a CVT transmission in the Patriot, try rolling into the throttle to the 3/4 open mark when you want to accelerate quickly. Seems to work the transmission better than going for a full throttle stomp off the line.
tiptronic 07-11-2009, 06:01 PM Nope tuning mods for the Petrol version are very few & far between this side of the Pond.Plus the Cvt will only take so much power!!Thats why they dont put it in the SRT/4 Dodge Caliber. You are limited to Freeflow air fillters,CAI kits ,mufflers& manifolds ( Headers) .Dont try cheap Ebay chips , the ECM wont take it & will only bugger your engine up.
However the Diesel can be chipped up to 200 bhp.
I dont reccomend that high & may eventually chip mine to about 170, a Gain of 30 bhp!!

i've got a CRD as well...why would you chip it to get a few extra hp's when it's the torque that really matters?
or am i missing something?
tiptronic 07-12-2009, 07:25 AM Chipped for this very reason ( DTUK Ltd )
Standard BHP 103/140 PS
Tuned BHP 122/166 PS
Standard Torque 320 Nm
Tuned Torque 380 Nm........
Its a bit of a No Brainer.........
outrun 07-12-2009, 12:03 PM The bhp output for a 2.4 is nothing short of average when compared to many Eurpean cars.
Does anyone do a dual exit exhaust? I know that Magnaflow and Gibson do systems but is there anyone else?
Has anyone got experience of these and other tuning mods to their Riot?
I'm determined to squeeze a few more bhp out of it and to try and resolve the terrible low rev stutter that should have been sorted by the factory mapping guys.
Steveo55 07-12-2009, 12:51 PM It's horses for courses, if you want to burn rubber then buy a sports car. If you want a 4x4 that's an all round performer, looks good and does it's job then the Pats as good as any in my book. If you can easily afford to run a 3.0 litre diesel like the G Cherokee or Commander then that'll give you more 0 -60 but at a price.
outrun 07-13-2009, 07:14 AM I don't need advice on what other cars are faster, thanks. I'm asking if anyone here has upgraded the performance on the petrol Riot, not why the have or have not or whether i need a bigger engine.
If i want to paint it pink and run 24" chrome wheels, then i will, thanks.

At this point, your only options are a cold air intake (K&N or AEM Brute Force) and a good cat back exhaust. I wouldn't look for a dual exhaust, just a well designed single exhaust. This way you get the weight savings and a little extra power. The dual is just going to be a Y-pipe out to two mufflers. I remember a few years back, Hot Rod magazine did an article where they made more power from a single 3" exhaust w/catalyst then a 2-1/4" dual system w/o cat's (on a 350 powered Chevy pickup truck). If you wanted to go a little extreme, get some smaller overall diameter tires to change your final drive ratio.

is it diy?
tiptronic 07-14-2009, 05:52 PM Harold!! check out these sites--Its UK but you may have similar in Australia;;;

or www.chipexpress.com
see how you get on mate, I'll see what else I can find for you!!
outrun 07-15-2009, 04:17 AM You can "chip" the diesel easily. There's numerous companies that do everything from 10 to 70 bhp - although i'd go for 30-40 maximum or you'll need to seriously upgrade the brakes etc.
As it's a VW sourced Common Rail Diesel - there's many car that use the same and so it's been worked on time and again.
One place to look is www.startech.de as they are the official Brabus owned Jeep tuner. They do a remap unit thingy for 999 euros which does not affect any warranty as it's Jeep approved. Expensive but you know that it's been done properly.

Thanks todde702! :smiley_thumbs_up:
I've ordered a k&N filter and i've begun the investigation into exhausts. I take your point about the dual exit, i think you're right so i've binned that idea. It looks like Magnaflow are the main source of possibilities and although they don't really have a UK presence, i can of course order direct from the US. There doesn't seem to be enough of them here for any of the European manufacturers to bother to design a system. I guess most owners are not into street mods and are happy with the stock Jeep. Fair enough i guess, each to their own.
