I think the wife and I will be making a weekend trip up here next weekend. We'll let you know how it is. We'll probably hit the Manistee Nat'l Forest; Huron will be for another trip.

We just got back from our weekend trip to Manistee National Forest. It was a very nice trip. After purchasing our OHV pass, we hit the Forest Service Roads that have been opened to four wheel vehicles.
If you are into ATVing, there are a lot of ATV trails, along with a fairly good number of motorcylce only trails.
Parts of the trails didn't require 4WD. However, if it rains, I wouldn't want to be out there without 4WD being available. In NW Indiana, we had severe storms, but they missed the Big Rapids, MI area. They only got some light rain, judged by the low amount of dust on the trails.
The area is very nice. If you're into camping, there is plenty available. If you prefer motels, the cities around the national forest provide plenty of rooms and places to eat.

Not to knock lower michigan as it does have some very nice areas, but you they really are not near as amazing as the Upper Peninsula. Glad you had a good time.

. . . and the UP can't compare to Gary, IN;) They have some amazing off road trials in the city!
My nephew and his wife live just outside Traverse City. They have a nice house in a wooded section. Just a really nice area.
