Am I reading more into this article than is there?!?!? You tell me...

...All Jeep Patriot models get a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with Variable Valve Timing (VVT) that produces 172 horsepower and 165 lb.-ft. of torque. According to Jeep, VVT enables the Patriot to offer more power, and better fuel economy than other, comparable models. The Patriot comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission -- with an optional continuously variable transmission (CVT). A 2.0-liter diesel powerplant will also be offered, mated to a six-speed manual transmission. With diesel fuel and engines meeting stringent emissions standards, look for diesels in markets where they once were unable to tread... source (http://www.autobytel.com/content/shared/articles/templates/index.cfm/article_id_int/818)

I am not sure how new/old this article on the 2007 Jeep Patriot is. If it is new, could this be the reason for the delay on its introduction? If that's the case, I will get my sleeping bag ready to camp out at the dealership waiting for mine to arrive! :D

I would imagine that is for the world market, not the US Market.

As I said in another thread, I was able to look over a diesel Caliber at the local dealer. Diesels are already here in Germany but not offered in the US.

I for one would love to own a diesel Patriot, but I'm not holding my breath for then to sell one in the USA.

While getting gas last night, I noticed an interesting sign on the diesel pump. I should have written it down and may not remember the exact wording. It said something to the effect of this diesel is not for use in 2007 or later model vehicles and may result in damage to engine or void the warrenty.

Why would they sell something for vehicles which were not already on the market?

If this diesel is for the newer engines that means they already have the fuel base in place out here for those newer diesel engines! If so, the vehicles must be on their way pretty soon. or am I just totally off on this?

I agree that it will only be offered for the World Market....that has been written in many articles. However, why would they only offer a diesel w/manual transmission and not a CVT version?

Here is an off-the-wall hypothesis: Maybe high torque would cause damage to the CVT belt where high HP wouldn't. The current gas model is 172HP and 165 torque. I'd imagine a diesel engine would drop HP a bit, but raise the torque to at least 185.

If that's the case, the U.S. isn't likely to see a diesel option because the average American isn't interested in having to shift.

I'd buy a diesel Patriot.....who wouldn't?...but I don't expect one, if at all, for a few more years. Further, if they don't mate it with the CVT, they might as well not bother. Further, why wouldn't they worry about getting one in the gass guzzling Liberty, Commander, and GC before they bother with the Patriots 24/29 rating?

Yep, I doubt a CVT in this price range would handle the power of that diesel for very long. It's rated at about 230 ft-lbs of torque, quite a step up from the 165 ft-lbs of the 2.4L gas engine.

Give it a few years and if the new diesel in the WK takes off, followed by the return of a diesel Liberty and we might see it; until that time, we in the states are just out of luck.
