: Eyeing an XJ
HoosierMud 04-17-2009, 02:50 PM Just ran across a 2000 Jeep XJ Cherokee, 4.0L, at a dealership in Merrillville, IN. It has 117,000 miles and they are asking $5,999. I haven't checked NADA or KKB for their pricing info, so I'm not sure how the dealer's price stacks up.
It is a maroon color/very dark red. I always have liked the color. Many years ago, my motorcycle was about the same color.
Of course, if we were to buy it, I would still keep the one approaching 300,000 miles and my wife would inherit the 'new' XJ.

navy48 04-17-2009, 05:05 PM still miss my XJ
yea, me too.....mine was only a '94 2dr base SE model with a 2.5L 4cyl and a 5sp, but was it ever a great vehicle! it was a trade in at work and I think I only gave like $1500 for it, drove it for 3 years and sold it to my g/f at the time for $1800. not a bad deal.
if I could only find one of those today.....wonder if she would still consider selling it back to me now that I'm MARRIED???:icon_rolleyes:
I really love those 2dr's!!! :smiley_thumbs_up:
jepstr67 04-17-2009, 05:58 PM HoosierMud,
What if any engine work have you done on your high mileage XJ?
IowaEagle 04-17-2009, 06:18 PM Seems a little high in price. We bought ours when it had a bit less than 100K and it was six years old for $3500. Its a fairly well equipped Sport model, auto, PW, PL, A/C but only with the NP 231 transfer case. Engine has 200K on it with no repairs.

The 4.0L inline 6 is a bulletproof engine.
The engine has not been overhauled. We put in a couple water pumps and a starter or two, and oil pump. We replaced the timing belt at 75,000 as PM step, but not since. All the minor maintenence, my son has been able to do.
Normal maintence is a breeze on the XJ. Oil changes, I don't even need to raise the XJ, just crawl under and drain and plug.
Heck, the AC went out at about 150,000 miles and I didn't get it fixed because I didn't want to spend the $$ with "that many miles". Foolish me!

I know they are tough engines. Jeep should have kept the I6. It's far better in Jeeps than a V6.
I have almost 200K on my 258 in the Scrambler. Same water pumps, starter, alternator timing chain at 175K as a PM. I just don't have the kind of power I should anymore. I'm looking maybe at a valve job. That's why I asked. Rings must be good, I don't burn oil. That I6 is a great engine. AMC:smiley_thumbs_up:
HoosierMud 04-17-2009, 07:18 PM The engine is showing its age. Even now, although I wouldn't dream of doing it, I can still put a few sports cars to shame--and mine is an auto. If I had the engine overhauled, I might be afraid to drive the thing!
I always wished I had a stick in mine, but now, at times, with the arthritis in the hip acting up, I guess it is better I don't:-((
I talked with my wife and we will go look at the 'new' XJ tomorrow morning.
Yep, AMC had an excellent engine!
IowaEagle 04-17-2009, 08:35 PM 258 weak points were the OE timing chains and oil pumps, after they were replaced at around 100K they were good to keep on going. Only really bad thing and AMC got conned into this as a research project with money behind it, from what I hear, was the '81 - '86 synthetic valve covers. The 4.0 that came from the 258 had all of the little annoyances fixed -- best I-6 engine AMC every built and they built some good engines -- despite many people thinking Ford, GM or others built their engines for them.
HoosierMud 04-17-2009, 08:43 PM I might be wrong, but only for the first couple years GM built the V-6 for them.

There were some GM engines both an I4 and a V6. Neither were very good. There is an AMC I4 which is a good engine.
In the Kaiser years Jeep used some Buick engines 350 V8 and 225 V6
Before that most Jeep engines were made by Contenental. The 226 I6 used in my Willys was used in Boats and Generators. In fact the Continental flat head 6 was still used in generators up into the 1970's. The 327 V8 was also a Continental.
The only engine Jeep developed from scratch was the 230 OHC I6 in the early 1960's. In 1970 with access to AMC engines Jeep called those engines their own.
Here is a link to a great Jeep engine site! It shows all engines Jeep ever used.

IowaEagle 04-18-2009, 08:17 AM Yes, I should have said Inline 6's as AMC did get some V-6's from GM and I-4's from both Audi/VW and Buick until the AMC 2.5, another 258 derivative, was designed.
HoosierMud 04-18-2009, 09:33 PM It's a no go on the XJ:-((. I told the salesman I would walk OTD with it for not a dollar over $5,000, including title and taxes. According to KKB and NADA, the most they would have given on that vehicle for trade in was 2900 plus change.
He came back with an offer of $5445. We got up and left.
I love the XJ's, but if the salesman isn't listening, I'm not dealing.
ilflyya 04-18-2009, 09:43 PM When I first got my old XJ, I didn't know much about Jeeps. I had no expectations whatsoever. Once I got it off road, it was a different story! I was at a bonfire/camping event and my buddies needed help getting stuff to the site, because their Ford Ranger 4x4 was getting stuck on the trail. They loaded their stuff, got inside, and were amazed how we didn't get stuck once.
There was this really swampy area, water about 5-7 inches high and muddy. The stock Cherokee went through it like nothing. At the time, I thought it as nothing, but as I looked around, all my buddies were stunned. They said, "How the hell? The Ranger couldn't even make it half way!" I miss that XJ!

We missed out on a good deal on an XJ about 6 months ago. We waited one day too long to go back to the dealer. He sold it to a girl, which was her first vehicle, which her dad bought for her.
IowaEagle 04-19-2009, 09:24 AM I thought they were asking to much for it. Keep your eyes open, plenty of them were made and sold.

What did they get from Audi/VW? And Don't forget the Nissan I6 diesel in the CJ10.
IowaEagle 04-19-2009, 12:11 PM Used in AMC cars before '80 -- maybe for 2-3 years. Found in Spirits and Concords. I don't know if they found their way into any AMC built Jeeps. I did not know about the Nissan Diesel I-6? I will have to research that one, thanks for the head's up. I know a Diesel found its way into some XJ's, not many in the US and I think that was after the AMC days. Ah, now I see why about the CJ10: It was sold commercially for military or for export outside of the U.S. Although, I will have to learn some more as diesel interest as a swap in engine into Eagles is being discussed again. I remember another Japanese diesel powered truck using the AMC configured TF 727 so maybe the CJ10 Diesel was configured this way too?
Now that I have totally hijacked this thread. I apologize and know we must get back to finding and XJ for HoosierMud.
