I was invited to a marketing / research clinic for the 2008 Liberty. It looks teriffic, but it’s different design philosophy than the current, rounded theme. It’s got a “baby Commander look, but changed enough so that it still looks like a Liberty. It’s a good 6 or 7" longer (with n spare tire on the back). The front end is a GREAT version of the Commander’s nose - and i seems to work better on the new Liberty than on the Commander. The headlights & tur signals are multi-lens units behind a large, rectangular plastic housing. There are small ai vents about 1" tall and 6" long where the side of the hood wraps over to meet the very back o the front fender - just under the A-Pillar. The vents on the prototype were not functional

The side profile has a glass / greenhouse that is nowhere near as tall as the current model’s kind of exaggerated tall glass. Think Hummer H3 side glass, only taller. The fender flares are still there and still trademark KJ. The rear end is very updated, clean, modern and has no spare on the back. It may have been a bit of an optical illusion, but the front wheels look like they are really pushed forward more than on the current model. Definitely not an overhang problem!

The interior is simple, but feels MUCH wider than the current KJ. They also had a Limited trim level that was pretty luxurious due to all the options. While sitting in it, you immediately notice that it does not have that “sitting on top of the world” view of the current KJ, but still has a good view over the hood. You notice a loss of headroom - either that or they had the seat cranked up to its highest position (you weren’t supposed to move it). The dash uses the current, DCX radio / navigation systems from the Grand Cherokee. The gauges are basic. The plastic on the door panels didn’t look as nice as what the current KJ has - it was more like a Chrysler 300C’s door panels. The back seat is much more comfortable and made for humans with normal spines.

Cargo area is definitely larger due to the added length, but they wouldn’t let you fold the seats down to see if they fold flat, etc. I did see extra power outlets in the cargo area as I was nosing around.

The only engine mentioned was the 3.7L V-6 and 4-speed automatic. No mention of a CRD or a manual.

Yeah I saw that, too. The way they were describing it, it almost sounds as if they are going to go back to the XJ look, since they called it a "mini-Commander". Plus they got rid of the rear spare.

Interesting indeed! Don't suppose anyone has any spy shots of the prototype yet???

More from the LOST forums:

Saw the new Liberty prototype today…Rubicon possible (http://www.lostkjs.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=10688)

Well DC was in town today showing off all their new “cars” and a Liberty prototype. I also saw/sat in the Patriot, Compass, and the new Wrangler. If you have questions about those PM me. I don't have much favorable to say about any of them except for the Liberty. The Wrangler was okay, but will take some work and $$$ for aftermarket goodies.

As for the Liberty…I think we can work with this guys! Total length is 176.4”. It is quite a bit shorter in height (no less ground clearance), and probably doesn’t have as much head room as the current model. Overall, it looks much more masculine. The lines are very square. Think a cross between the current model and the new Commander and you’re close. Major functional changes (and there weren’t many) were an XJ style rear gate (swings up) and a spare tire where the gas tank currently resides. When you consider that the current model is about 174” long (but includes the rear mounted spare) then we’re probably looking at a body that is 10” longer in length. The interior was completely different, but not bad. Save for the head room, it looked like the passenger compartment was about the same size, with some more cargo room. Interior also looked more modern and has more square corners, metal, etc. We can easily rip off the new bumpers (front was big and low hanging) and with the straight lines it should easily accommodate aftermarket ones.

It did not have a working suspension or axles so I can't comment there. It is said to be coming out with the same 3.7 engine.

The last question on their survey was about a new “off road package” that included lockers in both axles, Quadra Trak transfer case, a 1” “body lift”, and 31” MTRs. Sound familiar? Their artist’s rendering said Rubicon right on the hood.

They also had a brand new sunroof they wanted our thoughts on. It was basically a fabric roof that you could push all the way back or forward. From inside the Liberty it was pretty cool to see nothing but sky (or convention center ceiling in this case), but outside it looked horrible and I'd worry about leaks.

So, questions anyone?

Sounds cool, but I'll be sorry to see the last remnants of the 'Dakkar' look go. That was an awesome concept that never saw the kind of production it should have.

...The 2008 Liberty goes back to the Cherokee squarish look (á la Commander), and is about six inches longer. Again, a rectangular plastic front lens guards separate headlights and turn signals. The side glass is a bit shorter than in the current model, and the trapezoidal fenders continue; front wheels are moved forward. The interior is simple but wider than current models, with a much more luxurious Limited model. Door panels look cheaper, and the back seat is more comfortable. There is a larger cargo area, with power outlets; the 3.7 liter V6 and four-speed automatic will remain, at least for a while (Thanks, CanadianYJ).

Production is, according to oh20, to start in July 2007. The Liberty will include hill descent control, stability control with roll prevention, a cargo slide-out system, factory remote start, and the usual stereo/nav system gadgets...source (http://www.allpar.com/model/upcoming.html)

I am glad to see that things are moving away from the 'bubble' car look. I hate when a good car gets all soft and round. Hopefully some sketches or photos will surface...

I wonder if they will go back to the solid front axle. Probably not, but it'd be nice to have a non-Wrangler Jeep again that has two solid axles.

I completely agree, and with the new Compass for the lady-folk, I don't see why the new Liberty wouldn't be oriented for a man's taste.

I personally think it would be a good idea to make Select-Trak standard. While full-time 4WD isn't ideal for off-roading, it is more practical when you are in everyday bad weather....ie Rochester, NY!

One question that I have.....Liberty already has a weak break over angle...by moving the front wheels forward and making the vehicle longer, won't the break over angle suffer more?

That is probably true. Although the fact that this "Off Road" package mentioned only a 1" body lift to fit 31s probably means that there will be an increase in ground clearance of the stock Liberty (Can you even fit 31s with only a 1" lift in the current Liberties?)

Who knows if the increased ground clearance will cancel out the increased length to improve/equal the breakover.

I believe there is a solid front axle modification available for the current Liberty's IFS--if one wants to go through the trouble of installing a solid axle. Also, I'm not sure what it does to the vehicle warranty.

Warranty? Where we're going we don't need.......warranties!

I'm not a fan of the current generation of Libs; however, the more I read on the next gen, the more excited I'm getting. I wonder if my XJ will last till the unveiling of the new Liberty?

For a serious off road edition of the next generation Liberty, what would be a good name?

Mine: Liberty, Cherokee edition. Better yet, just rename it the Cherokee.
