how does the electronic stability control/traction control work with the 4x2 can it put power to the back wheels still?

no, but it does apply the brakes to keep it straight lined...

If you are applying power to the front wheels and one wheel is spinning faster than the other, the traction control will apply the brake on the spinning wheel to force more of the torque to go to the non-spinning wheel. It really helps the traction in slippery conditions. It is better than a two wheel vehicle without traction control or a limited slip differential. I think of limited slip like my current 1995 car has as passive traction control and my new Patriot as "active" traction control.
