: New Patriot owner in Upstate NY... need toys now!
kapalacc 05-24-2007, 06:39 PM First off, thanks for the awesome board. Not a big board guy, but was stoked to find this one.
I just picked up a Jeep Green automatic 4x4 Patriot! When I was first contemplating my purchase, I was really disappointed about the trade-in on my Vibe, but since my purchase, I couldn't be happier. Not a lot of them (haven't seen one) in this part of NY, so it looks like I'm at least one of the first to show the area the latest and greatest.
Now I'm looking for a safari basket for it. Anyone know of any place to get non OEM Jeep Patriot stuff???
Freezal 05-24-2007, 06:58 PM Hello and welcome to the boards....... I hope you get much enjoyment out of you new ride...
But....
Just to beat the other guys :worthless:
Rottenbob 05-24-2007, 07:17 PM Congratulations on your new Patriot! :beerchug:
I was just researching cargo baskets this morning. I really like the Black Widow (http://www.discountramps.com/roof-rack-basket.htm) because the bars are spaced fairly close together, decreasing the likelihood of something falling out the side.
What part of Upstate NY are you in? I was born and raised Syracuse. A few times when I was a kid we went camping in the Adirondack mountains; beautiful country up there.
jeepmuck 05-24-2007, 08:31 PM Welcome from a Buffalo native! Sounds like we have similar taste in Jeeps! Enjoy it!

...and all the Phoenix area AZ'ers get the 4x2. Here in mid-state AZ the handful that have come in have been 4x4.

Here in Houston, Texas we have had a pretty good mix. Atleast thats what came up in my search for my patriot.
johnshan93 05-25-2007, 11:36 AM Congrats & Welcome! Enjoy the new ride! still about a month of waiting for me
camilocano 05-26-2007, 08:58 AM Hi, New member here too. Currently live in Indiana, but I will be moving into Rochester by late Fall. Thiking about the snow I am interested in geting the Patriot. What I am not sure is if should wait and get the 08 in NY or get the 07 in IN right now. Just wondering how much did people pay in NY to register a new Patriot Sport 4x4 (or limited if the amount changes)? Thanks.

I haven't purchased or registered one, but here is some background for NYS:
http://www.nysdmv.com/register.htm#cost
"The registration fee for most types of vehicles depends on the weight of the vehicle. When you register a vehicle for the first time, the total fees normally include: the sales tax, a vehicle plate fee or registration transfer fee, a title certificate fee, and vehicle use taxes in some counties."
Sooo....
Sales tax in Monroe County, NY - (where Rochester is) is 8% - ex. 8% on a $22K purchase is $1760.
Registration fee is $49-$51 for two years (depends on the weight of your Patriot)
New plate fee is $15
Title fee - $50
No usage tax in Monroe County
Occasionally, the dealer may charge an additional "processing fee" for handling all of this for you too.
I think that the sales tax in Indiana is 6% so there you save a significant chunk of change for buying a 2007 now and registering it where you live.
camilocano 05-26-2007, 10:54 AM Thanks for the information. I did a quick quote for the Patriot (actually the Compass 4x4 because the Patriot is not in the system yet) here in IN and they do charge usage tax which all together with registration fees runs for about $195. I would have to register in IN and then in NY ($195 +$115), but I would save around $400 in taxes... The question then is: should I wait for the 08 or enjoy the 07 right now?
Tmax60 05-26-2007, 12:23 PM Hi Camilocano,
Welcome to the boards! I can't resist this...but...you're moving here (Rochester) on purpose?! Have you ever been here/visited before? The general flow these days is out of this area. You have not experienced snow until you live here so definitely opt for a 4 X 4 version, no matter what you decide.
I think I'd get the Patriot now and enjoy it, as long as you can find one equipped the way you like. Either way, I'd purchase before moving to the land of taxes (NY).
It looks like the '08s are going to offer a few more items as standard equipment and a few new colors, but styling will remain unchanged, but you can almost bet that the price will NOT remain unchanged...

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa311/emoticonjoe/Nodding.gif A few years ago a friend of mine from Syracuse sent me a newspaper article stating that the Syracuse area lost 9% of it's population in the 90s (I left in '96, so I was one of them).

You got that right! I don't think there's really anything that you can say to someone to prepare them for the snow. All that lake effect snow that gets dumped on Roch-Syr-Utica is tremendous! A 4x4 would be a huge advantage.

You are spot on, RB. Syracuse usually "wins" the snowfall derby, but we're not usually far behind. It's not so much the snow, but the endless days of "Great Lakes Gray" that get to you. We can go weeks at a time in winter without sunshine.
camilocano 05-29-2007, 10:32 AM Thanks for the replies. This is definetely a friendly forum. Too bad I will not be able to contribute more as I ended up choosing another car. I went to the Jeep dealership here in Lafayette, IN and they were not willing to give me a good deal on the Patriot (saying that they were selling really well and could not give me anything lower than invoice). I loved the style of the car, but I was looking for a spacious 4x4 on a limited budget: the car is mainly for my wife's use and we have a newborn with car seat and stroller, plus a 50 lbs dog and just one small salary. The base Patriot lacked some features I really need (cruise control, AC, crossbars, etc...). In order to have the Patriot with all this I would have ended paying much more than what I was willing to pay. I bought a 2007 Forester 2.5X which has the AWD I need for the snow (as everyone suggested - you guys are freaking me out with the snow), a little more space in the back (although sacrificing rear seat comfort which I loved in the Patriot) and all the standard goodies (cruise control, etc...). The price was also something that made me decide for the Subaru (I payed $18600 out the door because there is $2000 cash back offer right now on 2007 Subarus).
There are mixed feelings right now. I am happy that I have a new car that fits our needs and our pockets, but I have a hole in my heart 'cause I had fallen in love with the Patriot (specially the orange concept image with the roof rack that I had seen around). I am also sad because as a trade-in I left my '95 Jeep Cherokee Sport which has a bad transfer case and a bad AC so I only got $500 for it. That sucks 'cause I loved that car too (took me through grad school in NE Ohio with little or no problems at all).
Thanks for the warm welcome anyway and all the best for the Patriot owners. Hopefully I'll join your ranks some time in the future.
cgraskamp 05-29-2007, 12:57 PM What kind of subaru did you get...
an outback, impreza, forester?
I really like how well the impreza drives
camilocano 05-29-2007, 06:59 PM I bought a 2007 Subaru Forester 2.5 X. I also like the Impreza. Actually my other car is a 2005 Outback Sport SE which is a beefed-up version of the Impreza wagon.
kapalacc 05-29-2007, 07:24 PM I love the black widow basket and I want it! I just need to order crossbars so that I can mount it and cna't find them anywhere - any leads?
camilocano 05-29-2007, 09:23 PM I have the Black Widow basket and I bought it for my Subaru OBS. Its very easy to assemble and install and beats the brand-name baskets in price. If peope are interested I can take a picture of my OBS with the Black Widow.
When I was thinking of buying the Patriot I looked online for the patriot crossbars and found them in the mopar parts store for $129.
kapalacc 05-31-2007, 08:09 PM Please send a pic to my email at kapalacc@juno.com. Thanks for the pic and the crossbar lead.
camilocano 06-01-2007, 07:30 AM I'll take the picture today and send it tonight.
