It is that time of year again when I grow tired of driving my expendable new car and start to look longingly at the Jeeps I keep out of the salt. I love my Patriot, but there is something about the J-series that really says serious Jeep.

Anybody else eying up a prized classic and just waiting for winter to go away?

You wait until March to get the itchy trigger finger on buying a new Jeep? I caught that fever the first time the temperature dropped below 40 degrees!

Just getting the ones out that I don't like to get salty in winter. I will drive the Willys when it is really cold and dry out, but I try to avoid the slushy weather. Most of the fleet stays indoors when there is salt on the roads.

Jepster I'm now getting the itch but my "in-the-process-of-being-restored '79 CJ-5" isn't road worthy yet but hopefully by the summer.

They ended production in 83. What do you have under the hood?

Did you buy a new tub or did you really fix up the original? If so, who's did you use. I looked into Repli-tub from Willys Overland Motors for my CJ8, but I really wanted the "Jeep" embossed in the side like the original so I drove out to California and bought a rust free original body.

Glad to see you kept a Jeep engine. Nothing burns be more than Chevy engines in Jeeps. The fellows who drop a Chevy 350 in there just don't get Jeeps.

There is a guy that comes to meets who totally rebuilt a 63 Gladiator Pickup with an AMC 401 and some hefty off road running gear. I looked it over with a very critical eye and if it was possible to use an original Jeep part, from any year, he did!:Very nice rig. smiley_thumbs_up:

When I was a kid, my dad was always a very typical car owner. Buy a new car, drive it for 3-4 years and trade it in. The only exception was a CJ2a that he picked up for $500.00 (try that one now) it ran great and looked good too. The first thing he did was drop in a Perkins diesel, and a 4 speed, I absolutely loved that thing. I'm pretty sure that's what started my love affair with diesels. So that's the itch that comes back every spring for me. Find a good open jeep, and slip a good diesel into it.
**sigh**
Maybe one of these years

The Perkins diesel was an engine Jeep used. He probably just used factory parts for the conversion.

That's entirely possible, I was only 9 or 10 at the time so I'm not sure, I remember there was quite a bit of welding involved. But mostly I remember all the fun we had in it.

I found one on ebay that was suposedly a '72 which I know is slightly different from what I have, but figured it would work. I made new body mounts and had to redrill for the brake master cylinder on the fire wall. Other than that it worked well for me. Right now I have most of the wiring to do under the dash and to the lights. I have 31 x 10.50 BFG Mud Terrains on chrome powder coated steel wheels. I also sprayed bedliner the whole outside of the body custom colored to match Jeep's Rescue Green color. I did the inside, underside and dash in black bedliner. I will post pics of that soon on here and my website.

You don't think what? Nothing controversial here. We are just getting old vehicles ready for summer.

It ain't a Jeep, but...

The old Studebaker is all polished up and ready for summer. There's a very active old car club in our little burg, so there will be cruises, shows, and lots of showing off to do. Took it out for its first spin on the highway a couple of weeks ago. Ended up driving twice as far as I'd planned, because it was just soooooo coooool ! Came back at 90 mph. It's now been 23 years since me 'n Baby got together. That paint is now twenty years old.

Times 2!!

Back in the 80's I saw a guy who had a nice Studebaker like that and he had just been hit by a 90 year old woman in a Dodge Polara. He was not a happy camper.

Are Stude parts hard to find?

A friend in the Studebaker Drivers Club had one almost identical to mine. Shortly after getting it restored, his daughter wrapped it around a telephone pole. He was also not a happy camper. Took him two years to round up the parts he needed, mostly trim pieces.

However, most parts are relatively easy to get. Almost anything mechanical is plentiful, and there are lots of reproduction body panels. Trim parts can be scarce, like the grill frame my friend needed to repair his. There is one parts supplier in South Bend, Indiana, where Studes were built, who has a huge inventory of NOS parts, and at reasonable cost. About two years ago, I bought everything I needed to rebuild the power steering for under $200.
