I will be ordering a Steel Blue Patriot soonish, with the 2wd and the 5 speed. And as I do a lot of research on the Pat, I know that the drivetrain will be the same as the Compass/Caliber siblings. What has me intrigued is hoping the SRT4 motor with the 6 speed from the rumored Caliber SRT4 would fit the Patriot as well. :wow: :D
I was looking at the JGC SRT8, but liked the Patriot as well.
Imagine the SRT Patriot keeping up with the SRT8 and getting 25+30 MPG as well.
Is this even feasable? or should I just try to retrofit a salvage SRT4 from a wrecked Neon and create my own beast?

You'd need all the electronics along with the powertrain.. It would take a whole heck of a lot of money to make the conversion and in that case, I'd just get the SRT4 from the Dodge dealership.
You do know that the GC/SRT8 gets about 13MPG right?
The SRT4 will probably be in the low 20's on the highway

while we are on the topic of bigger engines, do you think that in the near future, the pat will be have an optional V6?

Nope... You'd need to buy the liberty for a V6.
I think the Patriot will be (at least for the near future) a very capable Jeep that offers above "normal" gas mileage for an SUV. The HP rating my go up a few digits for the gasser version but it won't change much.
Some of us here are seceretly hoping for a diesel version.

yea thats what i figured. the V6 gets horrible gas mileage compared to an I4 and one of the patriots selling points is its good gas mileage
yeah. don't expect diesel in north america till the states change to low sulfur diesel, I read something about a timeline on that but can't remember right now.
Personally I couldn't see diesel in NA until maybe the next gen, or say, 2009/10 maybe
Just a guess.

Don't give up hope on the diesel. VW has already a 50 state approved 2.0 Bluetec and is introducing it as a 2008 model option. DC is also a partner in the Bluetec initiative so I would expect this engine will be available to DC. Don't forget that the export version on the Patriot will/does have a diesel option. Because the diesel is turbocharged, it can be rather easily "chipped" to alter the performance characteristics particularly when the injectors are also swapped to yield some pretty awesome torque.

From what I understand...
Any diesel-engine vehicle sold in the U.S. beginning in 2007 must be designed to run on only ULSD (ultra low-sulfer diesel). You should not put regular diesel (which is low-sulfer diesel) in these vehicles; it could damage them and it is also illegal.
Older diesel-engine vehicles can use either the new ULSD or regular diesel.
After 12/01/2010 fueling stations will be prohibited from selling regular diesel.
The newer diesel-engine vehicles running on ULSD should meet the emissions requirements for all 50 states.
The state of Washington has a good page about this: http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/air/cars/DieselFuel.html

Low Sulfer Diesel is already to go from what I understand... We're just waiting for the vehicles
