: Rear Passenger Windows

I was looking at a couple of pictures of the Patriot on this site and noticed something...the rear passenger door windows are actually divided into 2 parts: One movable/retractable and one in a fixed position. Does anyone have an idea why Jeep chose to do this? Or is this just normal? Why can't the backseaters get an entire window??? Are they not people too? Or is this some weird safety thing?

Looks like it woluld not roll ALL the way down if it was the full window.

Hmmm.

Don't know for sure.

You know, that's an excellent point. Good catch! I was so focused on the 2 part window that I totally missed the big honking wheel well...

The Liberty has the same setup - and Alex is right - the window would only roll partway and hit the rear wheel arch if it were one piece.

That's pretty common on a lot of vehicles.

Can somebody show a picture of the pat with all the windows down. Does that piece in the rear window get in the way if you want to rest your arm there. Also does it cause any wind noise. In my mom's XC90, if you are sitting in the front with the rear windows down, you hear this horriable, really loud thumping sound constantly over a certian spped. Almost like beating on a drum really loud.

I have been as fast as 50 mph with the rear window down, and none of that drum nosie.....

I have had my Pat since the first of April and have noticed what they call "wind buffeting" when rear windows is down. The noise seems to reduce when I lower the opposite window. The first time it happened I pulled off the road thinking something was wrong not having a car that did this before. It will really give your eardrums a shake.

I don't know the scientific name for it, but that thumping sound happens between the air pressure inside the vehicle vs outside the vehicle. As the two pressures press against each other, they create that sound. Opening another window even slightly breaks that pressure so the sound "goes away."

Az-Patriot 55 -- Here is a picture stolen from one of driver's posts. This pic also happens to be the one that got me fixated on the "2 part" window. :)

Correct. The same thing applies (or will apply) to those of you with sun-roofs when you drive around with them fully retracted. You'll have to crack the rear windows to equalize the pressure so you don't experience the buffeting.

High pressures like to occupy areas with lower pressures
Cars with windows open create a vacuum of low pressure that counter acts the high pressure
Too much vacuum builds up and the air "pops"

Thanks alot for all of the responses, they sure do explain alot. That is a good picture of the window. I do remember looking at it before, but I didn't notice the two piece aspect.

Come on gang!!? :)
It's to look like the old Cherokee Sport. Period.

Now, why it had this setup in the first place, I agree with you guys.
