: smokey CRD
vkkilkenny 12-15-2008, 09:51 AM I have done 40,000km in the diesel and am starting to notice black smoke in the mirror if I put my foot down hard when taking off from the traffic lights. Anyone noticing this?? Even had a comment of "smokey diesel" the other day from someone who was following me.

KemnitZ 12-15-2008, 01:46 PM My Riot has 20'000km and already smokin'...as I know it's normal for VW diesels!:)
Thomas 12-15-2008, 02:01 PM Could probably be cured with remapping of ECU. With additional increase of hp and torque, hehe.
Its not very sexy smokin down the highway...
nebcarson 12-15-2008, 03:06 PM cause there is no DPF...even though all the oil companies think it has DPF comma, castrol....DPF= no smoke......
mine smokes a bit too when i floor it....normal
- George - 12-15-2008, 07:11 PM Its normal.
But black smoke.....hmmm
mine blows grey smoke.
tasar 12-15-2008, 07:37 PM Mine was doing it just before the 20000k service
Had service, and getting blue smoke again
Is the car due for a service ?
vkkilkenny 12-16-2008, 02:19 AM Could be. I have mine serviced every 15,000 km - so it has now 10,000km since it was serviced and I was going to wait another 5,000km. On another note thinking of getting a scan gauge now I have the Pat and the TJ. Also, anywhere recommended in Melb. to get TJ bits. First up will just be seat covers, mats etc. Then a bullbar with recovery points and then we will see what happens next.....

you know where to look for these in the tj section in AUSJEEP
parts for TJ - mats from Clark rubber
Scan gauge from wooders plus heaps of other stuff
recommend you get a steering dampner ASAP
seat covers heaps of options - I got mine from wooders but lots of threads on it
bullbar ARB or tjm get one fabricated to suit - look up fabricators
Northern or berwick will look after you if you want genuine but join mjoc first to get discount
poly good for 2nd hand and new and Jeep rcylers are great for 2nd hand
usa 4x4 can help with anything for a tj
have fun doing the tj it never ends - i've been going 3 years
Thomas 12-16-2008, 02:21 PM Hmm.
Black smoke: uncombusted diesel.
Grey smoke: water in the combustion chamber/exhaust.
Blue smoke: Oil...
I prefer black smoke. (or none)
tasar 12-18-2008, 06:16 AM gave mine a blast up a hill tonight and it was a light black colour - more misty
I don't think the people mover behind me enjoyed being smoked :)
- George - 12-18-2008, 07:07 AM hehe i love it when that happens.:pepper:
vkkilkenny 12-20-2008, 01:35 AM nice Rob.. not much smoke coming out of the pat. at the moment as the TJ is seeing most of the action :)
- George - 01-06-2009, 05:28 AM I read from a vw forum that if the crd's (tdi's:icon_rolleyes:) have a dpf, then it shouldn't blow smoke.....
so....according to that statement, it must have a cat converter for it to blow smoke?
All this might sound stupid, but i'm learning about diesels and how many differences there are to petrol engines. (Had a vt commodore before this..)
- George - 01-31-2009, 07:03 AM Getting onto the freeway, jammed the pedal, and smoked the car behind me.
Lotsa smoke hehe
tiptronic 01-31-2009, 11:06 AM All Diesels Smoke--- My old Skoda Superb with 1.9 VW Tdi, could lay down a smoke screen to make any Naval Destroyer jealous, fast away from the lights. Oh!! & didnt burn any oil!!!
todde702 01-31-2009, 11:50 AM All Diesels Smoke
True, but most times excessive diesel smoking means either the injection timing is off (mostly with mechanical injection/pumps), the injectors are dirty (improper spray patterns or not closing all the way allowing a slow/slight leak or drip) or higher then normal fuel pressure (increases the volume of fuel injected). In any case, if they didn't smoke alot when new, I would imagine something needs to be readjusted/cleaned. I had an old 1984 diesel Rabbit that smoked something terrible until I replaced the timing belt and adjusted the injection pump timing (mechanical injection). After that I got 54mpg cruising the highway (although I had also replaced the 4-speed with a gas engine 5-speed transmission) and only a small puff of black when punching it (as opposed to a mosquito controlling continous cloud).
- George - 01-31-2009, 07:19 PM So, if you replace the muffler with a bigger unit, do you get more smoke clouds?
he he
- George - 02-02-2009, 07:04 AM Boy did i smoke one guy out, he was on my ass and pissing me off, so i smoked him.
Shoulda seen the clouds...
