Changing / Replacing Spark Plugs

Spark plugs used, as annotated on underside of hood:


Engine Cover must be taken off by applying pressure to the underside of the cover in the four corners, to disengage the male/female connectors:


Female on underside of engine cover:


Male off of engine block:


I used a 3/8" drive, T30 socket to unscrew the bolt that is at the left top corner of each spark plug hole:


Shown here:


Bolt easily removes, x4


Unfasten wiring harness by grasping top and bottom sides to release latch:


Remove individual ignition modules x 4:


Spark plug can be seen at the bottom:


Use a spark plug specific socket that's 5/8" hex. The spark plug specific socket has a rubber grommet on the inside that holds the spark plug to the socket so you can take it out of tight corners (without having to use a magnetic grabber) and also helps for insertion by holding it in place thereby helping you not to cross-thread:


I also had to use a 6" extension:


Even after only 30K miles and 1.5 years, mine shown quite a bit of wear:


If you use spark plugs with metal gaskets, turn to tighten 1/4 to 1/2 turn past contact. I would hand-turn on until contact then use the socket driver after that point. That way you are ensuring no cross-thread AND can tell easily when the gasket makes contact.

I just did mine last night, it took 20 minutes, easier than an oil change!

clear star82 - Thanks for posting this pictorial. Your instructions were spot on, and I was able to change the plugs on my daughter's Pat yesterday in approx 20 minutes.

Car idles a lot smoother, and we'll be checking the MPGs over the next few weeks.

At 22K, the old plugs looked beat, and interestingly, the gap in the plugs from cylinders #3 & 4 was above .055". Either factory variance when installed or something with the engine. It does see a lot of highway use.

I checked the gap on mine when I took them out and they weren't that far off, but they were a couple thousands either way.

Only changes I can suggest would be to use anti-seize on the plug threads, dielectric grease in the boot connection and torque the plugs.

I would imagine very similar, but I would check on the underside of the hood, there should be a sticker towards the latch.

Crap, sorry guys, the pictures are now gone. They were uploaded to a website folder that I no longer maintain. Sorry for the short life, I'll attempt to take more pictures soon, when I get back from deployment, and can upload them

One of the pictures, that used to be posted, clearly showed the size of the plugs. Sorry buddy. The auto parts store where you buy your plugs should be able to direct you appropriately

It should be listed in the back section of your owner's manual. For the 2008, it is ZFR5F-11 (Gap 0.043).
