idatalink alarm/remote start for 2017

So i have the 2017 Patriot and i have a Viper 4706 alarm/keyless entry with remote start that i am DYING to get installed. The only problem i have is idata has not developed firmware updates for the 2017 patriot and when i called idata support, they told me to wait for the 2017 firmware instead of using the 2016 just in case something changed, but i think we all know that may not be the case.

I have been checking the idatalink website every day for new vehicle coverage to see if they have developed the firmware update for the 2017 Patriots (if it's any different than the 2016) alarm/remote start install. I noticed their website has the 2016 Patriot listed on their "new coverage" section but with a date of December 2016. If idata follows the same schedule of firmware updates based on vehicle models, then i may go the route of trying the 2016 firmware instead as i don't want to wait a year to get my alarm installed. Since it seems nothing drastic has changed with 1 year of production, then it may be just fine.

I have done tons of research and have become fairly knowledgeable on idatalink products but still have a few concerns, specifically on remote start using Tipstart type ignition switch's.

If anyone is educated on idatalink, or remote start systems with our pats, please let me know. I just have a few questions that i'd like to clear up. Otherwise i will post back here with more information as i come across it. Hopefully this can help others if they are going down the same path.

Update on this topic...

I emailed idata support after not being able to find any local shops to help answer questions as the moment i got technical they suggested i contact idata.

This was the response email i got regarding similar quests asked as the original post:

"Thank you for contacting us. First of all, I have to tell you that our solution must be installed by a professional technician for warranty purposes. Our product cannot be used as a "DYI" job even if we manufacture t-harness.

Furthermore, we haven’t validated that the 2017 Jeep Patriot is compatible with our technology. We need to test the solution. But we suspect that the vehicle platform is the same as the 2016. As soon as we have a 2017 Patriot available for our engineers, we should confirm that the solution is the same.

I would recommend that you check the link below on a regular basis to remain up to date on our progress:

iDatalink - NEW VEHICLE COVERAGE

We add vehicles to our coverage weekly (sometimes even daily)."

I did check their website and as of Feb 16th, they had updated their vehicle coverage to include a 2017 Jeep Wrangler, but still no Patriot yet. I will update again when i make any more progress.

So is the Idatalink required when installing just an aftermarket alarm? I have a a Scytec A20Ii have it installed and when i attempt to trigger the alarm it does not go off. I have used two types of triggers one is the 12 volts to the dome light, the other i have found the 4 door negative triggers from each door. the Negative is funny if i open the door once nothing then close it and open it will go off.
My local alarm dealers have told me that the system requires this idatalink to be installed then it will work with an alarm system. Just seems to me to be extras that I shouldn't need.

idatalink is not required to install but, it is one of several CANBUS/interface modules out there that allows keyless entry/alarm/remote start. From my research, idatalink is a well known and respected product in the industry and is usually available most places that offer install. It also has a very straightforward installation procedure and seems to work really well with newer cars' electronics. I would recommend looking into it as an option if you are having trouble with your alarm.

After reading this post i decided to look up the idatalink website again for updates and i see that they have included the 2017 Patriot on the list of approved firmware. As far as i know this is what i was waiting for and will be looking into getting my alarm installed using this product and hopefully soon. Also, from what i have discovered regarding the remote start T-harness, if you have a "TipStart" type of ignition, you will need T-harness model #ADS-HRN CH4 where the "CH5" is for "non TipStart".

I will keep this post updated with any issues or success.

Another update...

I got a hold of a "customer experience manager" through placing a general inquiry from their "Contact Us" link on their website. I asked about the T-harness required to use remote start since the harness they recommend is listed as compatible with "non TipStart" ignitions and my Patriot has TipStart and so they got back to me with this:

"We can’t confirm that the Tip start trim will be supported by the firmware we currently list online for the 2017 Jeep Patriot. We haven’t seen a tip start trim and we were not anticipated a new trim for this vehicle. At this time, your vehicle is not supported and I would recommend that your installer do not attempt the installation as long as we do not clarify the situation with this vehicle.

We will attempt to get a Patriot with the Tip Start system so we can test our product in it.

I will keep your contact information for when we will release a solution for your car.
"

Seems like i may have got the ball rolling in the right direction if they follow through any time soon with testing a 2017 Patriot w/TipStart.

I completely forgot to ask whether or not the regular alarm/keyless entry portion of the DEI Viper 5706V would have any issues with their recently announced firmware that i showed pictures of in an earlier post. I would assume no, since the problem i am running into is the T-harness specifically for remote start and has nothing to do with the alarm and other related components and i can live w/o remote start. I will ask again and update when i hear back.

another small update:

I had asked about the alarm/keyless entry portion of the security system and if it would work without dealing with the whole remote start/T-harness topic, and they came back with this-

"Unfortunately a bypass module is required for all these installations. As long as we do not have a firmware for the vehicle, the module will not function properly. You will have to wait for the firmware for the tip-start trim of your vehicles."

So looks like i am on the waiting bench again. I will update again with new information.

So last week I sent a reminder email to the product rep for idatalink to see if they had any progress or luck in getting a Jeep Patriot into their shop that had the "TipStart" ignition. I got a response asking for pictures of my key and ignition so that the technicians could verify further if they already have the solution or still need to develop it based on the trim level of my Jeep.

After they reviewed the pictures I sent, they have confirmed that the products and firmware on their website for a 2017 Jeep Patriot with standard key and automatic transmission will indeed work with my trim. Apparently they assumed I had the factory keyfob with the lock/unlock buttons which I do not have. I have the most basic key available with no buttons. This was the problem I was having with determining the correct components to use from idatalink. I asked the product rep once again to verify the required products to successfully install my alarm/keyless entry/remote start as well as which firmware to use. They are very adamant that you have it installed by a certified technician for warranty purposes and rightfully so. See below for the confirmation email:

"So in the case of using a Viper 5706v, you would indeed require an AdS-ALCA as a bypass module. The firmware installed by the technician would be the DL-CH5.

As for the T-harness, the ADS-HRN-CH5 is the correct. By “Tip-Start”, we mean a square plastic key (I left a picture below). It is not what you have. The harness is the correct one.

Your installer may get all of our products via our distribution channel. Please do not purchase our solution on eBay or Amazon since we do not offer any warranty on products sold online. I know you told me in the past that you do not intend to do this installation yourself, but I have to say it anyways.

So there we have it, folks. I know what I have to look forward to this summer! I hope this helps others in finding what they need for an alarm install with such similar trim levels.
