Hello everyone, I am new here. I mostly came here for some advice and others' experiences. I purchased a used 2008 Jeep Patriot last fall. I am not fond of brand new vehicles and frankly don't have the money to waste, so I am anticipating keeping this one for a long time.
Long story short, I purchased the vehicle knowing it needed some basic repairs. Since owning it, I've replaced the alternator as it was rattling and sounded shot, the front left wheel bearing needed replacement since the ABS wasn't working due to issues, and the exhaust manifold was cracked causing fumes to come in the cabin and rattling sounds while driving.
Now, I thought I had fixed everything with the manifold, but there is still a loud whining/whizzing type noise on acceleration. I assumed that was air escaping the manifold, but apparently it might be the transmission.
So that's my question, do any of you have experience with 2008 Jeep Patriot CVT's causing loud whining noises. My particular problem occurs when accelerating heavily - it can't be low speed acceleration. It typically occurs between 2 and 3k RPM, but it is not linked directly to RPM, just that you accelerate heavily.
Other symptoms to this problem are it doesn't seem to be temperature sensitive. This winter its done this at very cold temperatures, but its also done it when its been well above freezing. It doesn't seem to matter if the vehicle is in operation for many hours, or if its just started up.
And the last symptom, which I don't know if its related, but when it is super cold out, the transmission sometimes doesn't engage at all for several seconds. I started the Jeep up in -10 to -15 overnight weather, the following morning, and it needed to run for 20 to 30 seconds before the transmission would engage at all. The fluid looks normal, FWIW.
For my American friends, -10 to -15, is between 5 and 10 Fahrenheit.
Given how much I'm invested into this vehicle I'd be willing to put a new transmission in it when the time comes, its cheaper than buying a new vehicle since its got other updates like the manifold and brakes, etc. But I want to avoid that if possible. Could this be a fluid type issue? Maybe it needs to be flushed? Could it be anything else?
Any advice is appreciated.
